Midway-Waterton 345-kV Transmission Project

Quick Facts

  • Estimated cost: $42 million (substation $32m; transmission line $10m)
  • Proposed in-service date: May 2011
  • Maps: Project Map

This project consists of approximately 82 miles of 345 kV transmission line between the Midway Substation, which is located just south of Colorado Springs and the Waterton Substation, southwest of the Denver metro area near Chatfield Reservoir.

Seventy-three miles of existing line were reenergized at 345 kV, while nine miles were rebuilt to 345 kV. The project includes 345 kV switchyard additions at Midway and Waterton substations. It also includes other changes at Waterton: replacement of two 230/115 kV autotransformers; expansion and capacity upgrades to the 230 kV switchyard; and capacity upgrades to the 115 kV switchyard.

The project will facilitate potential generation resources in Energy Resource Zones 5, while improving system reliability. As other SB100 projects are developed, this project can also facilitate potential generation resources from Energy Resource Zones 3 and 4. The project was granted a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) in May 2009. The project was completed and energized on May 25, 2011.
